What do I want?

Once you decide on something, everything becomes easy. When you have not made up your mind there will always be friction. Most of us have struggled with certain roles and responsibilities. I have also had a few roles and responsibilities that I struggled with. A thought just came to me today that once we decide on something consciously, it becomes easier to take on the responsibility associated with it. Many a times I thought there was something wrong with the responsibilities that came with a certain decision I made. Most of the time, when I look back now, I see that I was ignorant about the true responsibilities associated with my decision. Sometimes, we want something but are not willing to pay the price for it. I have also many times wanted something really badly but refused to give up something in order to receive it.

If you want a really fit body, you have to go that extra mile and exercise, take care of your diet etc. If you want your mind to be peaceful, you have to meditate, you have to be more kind and compassionate towards yourself and others. If you want lots of friends, you have to go out, meet and help people. If you want a bigger position at work, you have to put in extra time and effort. Once we decide what we want, everything becomes clear. There is generally a mental fight we put up against so many things in life. We want that better job but are not willing to work hard for it or figure out how to get it. We want a bigger house but don’t want to learn how to save and invest money to buy that dream house. We want so many things, but we act like misers when it comes to paying the price for it.

It has struck me just recently how wrong I was in struggling against myself constantly and wanting things my way. I have realized that with any decision, any role come responsibilities that I don’t like doing. It is up to me to decide whether I want to keep fighting against myself or just accept a role in its entirety, with the good and the bad both. When we say to ourselves, I want something and I am willing to pay the price for it, we are actually doing ourselves a favor as we are conscious about the price we need to pay to get what we want.

The “little” me

These days I have become a little mindful of the “little me” inside myself. It seems to keep popping up in situations without my awareness and it brings on additional features like anxiety, nervousness, fear etc. Basically “Ego” is something that separates us from others. And I have noticed that my ego seems to come about in defense usually due to some mistrust or misunderstanding of the situation that I am dealing with. Deep inside the heart of the ego probably is distrust and caution towards a person, place or situation.  Einstein rightfully said, “More the knowledge, lesser the ego, lesser the knowledge, more the ego”. As you gain more wisdom, perhaps your ego gets smaller as you develop a broader understanding of people, situations etc. Even so, I think a very good life goal could be to get rid of the ego, if we don’t do this consciously, situations arise in our life that sometimes compel us to shed it. As we are humans, we are connected to other beings, nature, the atmosphere and the energies contained in the universe, we are a part of it all. To live a happy and peaceful life, we need harmony and we need to be truly connected to everything. Our ego is a hindrance to this connection and feeling of harmony. I am in a personal hunt for my little friend in disguise these days and I am trying to be mindful about situations that arise everyday so that the “little me” does not have to jump up in my defense too much and also so that I can go with the flow of life. (:

I am going to end this one with one of my favorite Sanskrit quotes:

Asato Ma Sadh Gamaya
Tamso Ma Jyotir Gamaya
Mrityor Ma Amritam Gamaya

Meaning:
“Lead me from the unreal to the real
Lead me from the darkness to the light
Lead me from death to immortality”

Much love y’all and Merry Christmas too ❤ einstein-ego
